Myanmar, a member of ASEAN has a long coastline of 2832 kilometers. The total area of swamps along the coast is about 0.5 million hectares which provides a very good base for the development of aquaculture including shrimp and prawn culture. According to surveys in marine fisheries, the Maximum Sustainable Yield of Myanmar is estimated at about 1.05 million tons per year, out of which one million ton was exploited last year. Inland water bodies such as natural lakes, reservoirs, river systems etc. cover an area of about 8.2 million hectares. At present, flood fisheries produce about seventy thousand tons of fish and prawn annually. To satisfy increasing demands, aquaculture, and to a lesser extent, inland fisheries will provide better opportunities for increasing Myanmar's fish production.
Livestock breeding of pedigree stock cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pig and poultry etc... form an integral part of the rural economy. Ownership of livestock is characterized by small individual herds and flocks. For the environmentally-friendly sustainable development of the livestock breeding industry, vast pasturelands with suitable climate and animal feed are available in different unpolluted regions.
To increase production of meat and fish products for domestic consumption and share the surplus with other countries is one of the sectoral policies and principle objectives of the livestock and fishery sector. This Fair is aimed to expand market share of Myanmar's surplus fishery and livestock products within the region and to visualize the investment potentials of the sector.
It is hoped that Myanmar Fishery and Livestock Fair-2003 will bring about more business contacts and promote intraregional trade in the sector. For foreign entrepreneurs who wish to participate in the Fair and for those wishing to
visit.
